Update 6/2

Roxy and her brother ChuCho were surrendered at Animal Control a little over a month ago. They are very attached to each other, but also very friendly to everyone. Unfortunately, they both have heartworms and a severe case of mange. But that's just the beginning of their story.

When Roxy and ChuCho's foster parents first picked them up, they thought these were the sweetest dogs they had ever met. It was heartbreaking to see the obvious neglect the dogs had suffered. They were both terribly underweight and had severe Demodex. You could see the back bones and ribs on both dogs, with Roxy's being particularly bad.

ChuCho was curious on the trip home and even tried to climb up front to take a look, but Roxy spent her time lying in the back, with barely enough energy to lift her head. That first night was a quiet one and both dogs curled up together and slept.

The next morning, Roxy was not doing well at all. She was having a difficult time breathing and she couldn't fully sit up. Foster dad drove Roxy to the vet's office where they ran some initial tests. It soon became clear that Roxy was a very sick little girl and needed to go to the animal emergency room. Once there, they hooked her up to an IV and started running more tests. Roxy’s parents were told that she may not make it through the night.

While Roxy was fighting for her life in the hospital, ChuCho was missing his sister. He spent the little bit of energy he had looking around the house for her. When foster mom noticed discharge coming from ChuCho's nose, she knew he wasn't doing as well as they had initially thought.

The next day brought some good news....Roxy had made it through the night! But both dogs were still very sick and went to another animal hospital and were admitted for a week. When the dogs got home, they were like two different dogs!

Now, every day ChuCho and Roxy are getting stronger and stronger. But they still have a long road to recovery. They will have another Mitaban dip soon, and the vet will then determine the course of treatment for their heartworms. It's going to be a tough couple of months for them, but the whole family is taking each day as it comes. Roxy and ChuCho have been through so much in a short time, but with the wonderful foster parents caring for them, and the help of everyone from Florida Boxer Rescue, they will continue to get better and become happy, healthy dogs.
