UPDATE 3/29/07:
Charlie's foster home sent us this
photo from his birthday party on January 9, 2007 when he turned a year
old!
Click here for his ADOPTION page
UPDATE 3/16/07:
Charlie has been officially adopted! Huge thanks to everyone who visited
the website to read his special rescue story and/or has contributed
towards his expensive veterinary bills. FBR, Inc. volunteers (not to
mention Charlie), really appreciate your generosity and compassion!
Update 3/4/07 Charlie sends his slurps and wiggles!!! He is so
happy! Dr. Hay is allowing him to take short walks with me, up to 15
minutes at a light pace. Charlie met his new neighbors and was a
gentleman. In addition, Charlie is able to play with Bella and Buddy
for short periods of time, if the play is not too rough. I run B and
B and then allow them to play with Charlie. That way the B's are
tired and it has worked well. As I type, Charlie is outside, with
Dane and John. He is leashed to our garden bench where he likes to
sit and watch them play basketball, etc....It's a guy thing! Charlie
went to dinner with us at his grandparent's last night. He remains in
very good spirits and is just about as sweet as they come.
Update 2/19/07
Here is the newest photo of Charlie #2...without his "cone" and with a
repaired leg! Thank you to everyone who has and continues to donate
towards Charlie's medical bills! As you can see from his new picture, it
is your compassion and generosity, that has helped Charlie have an
opportunity for a better life!
Update 2/14/07:
Hello to all :-) Charlie sends hearts and slurps
and wiggles!!! His visit to Dr. Hay's on Monday was a huge
success!!! They took x rays... Charlie has the metal pin as well as
7, yes 7, pins that hold it in place. Dr. Hay said Charlie must
remain on restrictions for another 2-3 weeks. We can gradually
increase his activity level AND we don't go back for 6 weeks!!!!! 6
WEEKS!!! They indicated his leg is healing just fine and Dr. Hay was
VERY pleased with his progress!!! Charlie had a low- key Valentine's
Day watching a movie with his boy :-) Happy Valentine's Day!!!
Update 2/6/07 GREAT NEWS!! Charlie is in a soft bandage WITHOUT
his splint!!!! He will wear this for one week and then ALL bandages
will be removed!!!!! Charlie will remain on play restrictions for
approximately two to three weeks. During this time he will begin to
use his leg. The staff informed us that initially his leg will
be atrophied and smaller than the other front leg BUT with time and
care his leg should strengthen and become more muscular!!!! This is such incredible news!!!! We are so happy
for Charlie!!!! Thank you to FBR and to ALL of Charlie's Angels who
donated toward his medical care!!!!
Update 2/1/07 Charlie had a wonderful evening. His grandparents
just got back from a trip and came to visit. Charlie was thrilled to
see them!!!! We even took off his "cone" for awhile. They commented
on how great he looks as he has gained some much needed weight!!! Not
to mention he is such a happy boy!!! He was so busy getting good
loving he forgot to try to chew his cast!!!! Have a great night and
thank you to all who continue to keep Charlie in their hearts!!!
Update
1/21/07 Charlie is doing so very well. He went for his
weekly visit to Dr. Hay who remains pleased with his progress.
Charlie's bandages and splint were changed. I believe we still have
a few more weeks!!! Charlie got a new bed this week and he snuggles
in it like a little baby. He sticks his head out the side because
of the large e-collar which remains on because our dear friend will
mess with his bandage. Charlie continues to tolerate his crate and
does not protest being separated from his Boxer brother and sister.
THEY remain in awe of him, because of the cone! Charlie is
amazing.....he makes me want to be a better person. Have a good
night and we will send a pic of him as snug as a bug in his new bed.
Update
1/14/07 Charlie was at Casa de Hay yesterday. Dr. Hay is
very pleased with how Charlie's leg is healing. They were
predicting another 3 weeks wearing the brace and bandages. Charlie
will go back on Friday for another bandage change. Charlie remains
in a very happy mood. We had guests for dinner last night and
Charlie was an absolute gentleman!!!! Hope everyone has a great
day!
Update:
1/9/07 Charlie celebrated
his first birthday yesterday!!! The birthday party was fun, BUT not
toooooo much fun per Dr. H. Poochie pops were served...AKA Frosty
Paws. Charlie loved it so much he almost ate the cup! He was a
sport and wore the party hat my son selected for the party. Sending
along a picture :-)
We are having so much fun with Charlie.
His mood is changing. He is a happy and playful Boxer boy. It is
exciting to see his sweet personality evolving with some time and
love. It is amazing this dog was abused and neglected. Charlie has
the sweetest spirit and heart. He adores my son and looks for him
around the house. We are still trying to keep Charlie calm; it is
hard not to play. His favorite toy is his birthday cake from his
friends Cosmo and Shoona. It tends to bring out his CRAZY side.
Charlie is tolerating his crate and loads up at anytime for a
cookie. ( He loves his COOKIES!!!) Today he stayed for 6 hours just
fine. Thanks to everyone for wishing Charlie a Happy Birthday!!!
Update 1/7/06:
Going over paperwork, we learned that Charlie's birthday is January
8th (tomorrow)! We are planning a little surprise for him! SHHHHHHHHHH............it's
a secret!!! Update
1/6/07: Charlie went to Dr. Hay's yesterday to have his
bandage changed. They were very pleased with how well he is
healing. The bandage is a flashy red. My son and his friends want
to place a lightning bolt on it....That might be nice! He will go
back on the 12th to have it changed again and have xrays. Charlie
is being such a great dog. We can tell he is feeling well as he
wants to play. Dr. Hay's orders are for play restrictions......so
we continue to follow through with those. We do take Charlie on
short car rides to get him out. He sits in my son's lap in the back
seat. Charlie is doing well with socialization....He LOVES my son
and his friends. All friends are briefed on the CHARLIE RULES and
all follow the rules!!! We cannot believe how many people have helped
Charlie through their donations. When I saw how the list has grown
I cried...Charlie is sooooo happy!! Thank you everyone!!!
Update 12/30/06:
Charlie was discharged this morning from Dr. Hay's
office. He seems very excited to be home with his brothers and
sister. He is resting now. He does not seem to be in pain; however,
he will remain on restrictions for activity for awhile. Charlie
will return to Doc on Friday AM to have his brace bandages changed.
His bandage is adorable!!! One of his friends at Dr. Hay's cut out
a pink heart to place on his bandage. So it is a very preppy pink
and green!!!! Nice!!! Update 12/29/06:
Charlie is resting well with some pain meds at Dr.
Hay's. They placed a metal rod in his leg about the size of a pen.
He will have a brace placed Saturday. His leg is swollen from
surgery, so the nice ladies are icing his leg to minimize the
swelling. They said Charlie remains in good spirits. We will pick
him up Saturday morning and bring him home. They indicated the home
care will be similar to what it was before.......Charlie will return
to Dr. Hay every week to have his leg checked and his bandage
changed. They will discharge Charlie with pain meds and
antibiotics. I will email later when he arrives home and will send
Christmas pictures later.
Update 12/28/06: Charlie is
scheduled to have the metal plate placed in his leg this evening.
We are VERY proud of our big eyed boy...The staff at Dr. Hay's
office said he is soooo good and they are amazed at how well he has
adjusted with the fixator on his leg. They said most dogs don't do
so well. They are predicting Charlie will be able to come home
Saturday morning. I will email when I hear how the procedure went
and further plans.... We got a call
from Doc at 9pm saying the procedure was performed and Charlie is
now resting. Charlie's prognosis is excellent and Doc's opinion is
that the leg should be straighter and more functional than he
original predicted. That is very good news!!! He is hopeful that
Charlie will be able to come home Saturday. Thank you all again for
your commitment to Charlie!! You are the BEST!!
Update 12/19/06: Charlie is spending
his second week at the clinic for daily adjustments to his
external fixator. Doc is hoping to lengthen the broken bones and
properly align them, so they can be fused together. Charlie's x
rays today indicated great progress with these procedures!!!!!
Dr. Hay was very pleased. Continued adjustments to the fixator
will be made this week on a daily basis. Charlie is doing well,
he is wooing the staff with his sweet spirit and Boxer kisses. He
sleeps with his pet monkey from home and don't tell the other
canine patients....but we think Charlie is their favorite!!!!
Charlie will be spending the holidays with his foster family and
grandparents and an aunt from
Texas!!!! Bella and Buddy ( Charlie's brother and sister)
miss Charlie and eagerly await his return. Bella, being a
somewhat mature female, tends to mother Charlie. And Buddy, well
he is just everyone's best friend, including Charlie's, and they
have been sharing toys and beds : After the holidays, Charlie will be going back
to the clinic. He will have the external fixator removed. It
is Doc's plan to do a bone graft on Charlie's leg to further
lengthen it and then fuse it together. This will be a most happy
day. His leg will be in a brace or cast and then Charlie will be
able to begin using his leg. Dr. Hay's prognosis for Charlie is
excellent, his leg will be much straighter and it will be easier
for him to run and play just like a good Boxer boy should!!!!
Charlie wants to thank everyone for their
encouragement and support from all over the country...and sends
his good wishes to all this holiday season!
Update:
12/17/06 Friday was a big day as Charlie
came home for his weekend leave! We have missed him!! Charlie has
been staying at Doc's office during the week because he must have pin
adjustments every day so needs to be sedated often. He is a trooper
and doing well. Right now Charlie is sleeping like a baby. He had a
fun weekend and did some socializing. Charlie was a wiggly boy, not
afraid of anyone....regardless of gender or size. Everyone got
kisses, and everyone is his FRIEND. He has established a bond with
his brother and sister and he adores our son. We left Charlie
alone for 45 minutes yesterday and it was OK....NO escape or torn
cone. All of us will miss him next week when he goes back to Doc.
Sending along a picture of Charlie with Dr. Hay and his wonderful
staff (pictured below), as well as one of Charlie hamming it up
(pictured above). Enjoy! ~Charlie's Foster Family
UPDATE 12/11/06:
Charlie is resting. They adjusted the pins in his
arm. I spoke to the Vet Tech and they are expecting him to stay for
the week. She said he was playing with his stuffed monkey and eating
some of the cookies we sent!
UPDATE:
12/9/06
UPDATE 12/5/06: Great News!!! Charlie has a foster home who will care for him through the surgery and recovery to repair his broken leg. Foster Mom will keep us updated with how Charlie is doing and provide new pictures from time to time. We understand she has already taken Charlie to Petsmart to get him a crate, bed, bowls, leash, collar, ID tag, toys, etc. and then he spent some time in the backyard playing and sitting around the pool. We are so happy that Charlie is now learning what it is to be with a family who cares about him :-)
A note from Foster Mom:

We are humbled by the tremendous outpouring of support for the care of Charlie #2.
