Juliette after her knee replacement surgery

In Juliette’s original medical spotlight story, we told you what a wonderful, sweet, smart, little boxer girl she is. She came into Florida Boxer Rescue with a bad case of demodex, but she also had very bad arthritis in her left rear knee. The leg was very painful and put limits on Juliette’s boxer play. Juliette was lucky to have foster parents who are both therapists - Mom is an occupational therapist and Dad is a physical therapist. They helped ease Juliette’s pain and made it easier for her to get around and play. But it became apparent that Juliette needed more help than just therapy.

After knee replacement surgery

On October 12, Dr. Hay evaluated Juliette’s knee. At that time, surgery for knee replacement was indicated. She remained at Dr. Hay’s and had the surgery a couple days later. Juliette stayed with Dr. Hay for some time before returning to her foster home.

Juliette attended the Boxer Bash on November 7 and was an instant hit with everyone she met. Even though she still wasn’t getting around too easily and was reluctant to use her leg, she was playful and friendly to everyone.

The following week, Juliette broke her leg… yes, the same leg that had the newly replaced knee. No one is quite sure how, or what caused her broken leg. She wasn’t running and playing at the time. But that Thursday, November 12, Juliette’s leg had to be amputated. Her foster family, as well as her entire Florida Boxer Rescue family, was very saddened by this turn of events.

From Juliette...

At first, after my last operation, they kept me away from the other dogs here....for at least two whole weeks. I know foster Mom and Dad thought it would be difficult to do, but I was good and they did a good job too. Can you believe it...I got my own room. I'm the first dog ever here to get their own room! It only has the crates and a dresser cuz they didn't want me to jump up on things, but what else does a Boxer need in her room? They even cut the door in half so the bottom is a like baby gate. I could still see them, and they could see me, but I couldn't get out and get hurt, and the other boxers couldn't get in. At night, Mom's been letting me lay right by her while she works. Sometimes Dolce, another boxer here, comes in and will lay down too. And, of course, I had to stay on the leash out front at potty time while the others went out to the back yard. All and all, foster Mom and Dad have being doing a great job taking care of me and making sure I get better every day. Soon I will be running like the wind...something I could never do before.

From Juliette's Foster Mom...

Juliette had her stitches removed on November 23 and Dr. Hay says she is looking great. She is now able to slowly be worked in with the others. She is separated only when we leave as she still should not be playing rough. I have to say she will make a great addition to any home. She behaves better than even Dolce who is the same age. Only having three legs is not slowing her down one bit. She is still wiggling that butt like crazy and trying to greet everyone she sees. She is just a great girl :)

I can't wait until she can run and play like the others.
